A recent study estimated that 184,000 deaths per year worldwide are caused by the consumption of sugary drinks which led to other health issues. They estimated how many deaths in the population could be prevented if sugary drinks were not consumed at all.

Large amounts of data from individual countries on sugary drink consumption and pooled estimates from cohort studies of the impact of these drinks on people’s BMI and risk of diabetes, and impact of BMI on other diseases were used in the study. In cohort studies, other factors may be contributing to the links seen, such as poor fitness.

Many different factors contribute to a person’s health and risk of death, making it difficult to separate out the impact of a single factor. Therefore, it is possible that the effects of sugary drinks used are overestimates. If these individuals had been participating in a fitness program, such as zumba or yoga classes, or even working out at the gym on a regular basis, results may have varied. However, the researchers did find that their results were not overestimating the effects of these drinks compared to other dietary components.

This kind of study is a basic way that public health professionals and policymakers estimate the impact of individual factors on deaths overall. Use of health clubs and gyms, by the individuals studied, was not considered at all. They use this information to identify how they could reduce the burden of disease in the population they are responsible for.

Sugary drinks are extremely high in calorie content. If individuals take in more calories than they burn off, they will gain weight. Being overweight or obese is linked to increased risk of a range of diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Working out at the gym on a regular basis, participating in high calorie burn classes, such as zumba, BodyStep, or Body Combat, are great ways to burn off extra calories. Reducing the amount of sugary drinks or cutting them out completely is a great way to cut down on calorie intake, which can lead to weight loss. Of course, implementing a regular fitness program, by visiting your local gym or fitness center, on a regular basis, is the best way to improve health and avoid a wide range of diseases.
