Perhaps, as a prospective or current member of Future Fitness Centers, you’re already aware of our variety of aquatics training classes; members at our 7 locations have access to Aqua, Aqua Zumba, Hydro-Pilates and Aqua Interval Training, as well as family-friendly lessons and exercise classes. What you might not know however, is that Future Fitness Centers also offers ISR Self Rescue classes for infants and young children, taught by certified Infant Swim instructors at several of our fitness center locations. This potentially life-saving instructional course is an absolute necessity for any parent of a young child; read on to find out more about what ISR Self-Rescue can teach your infant or young child, and how to enroll in our courses.

What is ISR Self-Rescue?

ISR Self-Rescue instruction teaches survival swimming lessons to infants and very young children, and was developed in its current form after over 45 years of dedicated research. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths for children younger than 4. A huge part of the mission of Infant Swim, the pioneers of this technique, is to end these tragic incidents. While prevention is the best cure, Infant Swim takes the approach that children should be prepared for immersion in water should barriers and warning systems somehow fail to prevent their access to it.

Lessons in ISR are one-on-one between your child and their dedicated instructor; lessons vary based on the child’s age and development, and are customized accordingly. Even the youngest of children learn the most basic of survival motions, which is to roll on their back, rest, float and continue to breath and stay in the same position until they are aided by an adult.

Who can enroll?

ISR Self-Rescue is available to children as young as 6 months old. Between ages 6-12 months, children will learn how to roll onto their back and continue to breathe. Children aged 1-6 are also able to take ISR lessons, which will involve more complex life preservation techniques, including rotating onto the back, rolling over to continue swimming, and rotating back onto the back in order to keep moving until safety has been reached or they have been discovered by an adult. Parents are welcome to observe their child during ISR Self-Rescue lessons.

What else can I do to practice poolside safety?

As our ISR experts will tell you, there is absolutely no substitution for vigilant adult supervision. That being said, taking a variety of measures such as installing pool fences, installing alarms to all doors and windows leading to a pool, and making sure that all adults in a household are trained and certified in CPR are good preventative measures to take, and will provide additional support to ISR Self-Rescue training.
